Children in nursery and school take part in high-quality phonics sessions every day. We use a systematic phonics programme called 'Letters and Sounds' to support our delivery of synthetic phonics and the teaching of 'tricky' words which are read on sight. Letters and Sounds is divided into 6 phases, with each building on the skills and knowledge of previous learning.
The early phases involve lots of speaking, listening and games, where the emphasis is on children’s active participation. As children progress they learn to use their phonic knowledge for reading and writing activities in guided sessions and in their independent play and work.
This approach has been shown to provide a quick and efficient way for most young children to learn to read words on the page fluently and accurately.
We want our children to develop skills of reading for life and develop a life-long love of reading. We therefore introduce children to a wide range of texts right from the start of Nursery. Children read and share texts in a variety of different genres to motivate them. Text choices are driven by providing high quality models for children, linking to themes and responding to interests.
We have a range of reading books for use in school and at home which complement and support our approach to phonics and early reading. The vast majority of home reading books when children are first learning to read are fully decodable (can be read just using the phonic skills your child has learned). As children become more fluent readers the level of challenge increases.
Children in school have a daily Guided Reading session. We believe that while it is important the children learn to decode words, this must work alongside getting them to understand what they are reading. Reading comprehension forms a vital part of our teaching of reading and this is done through both individual and guided reading sessions. These skills are developed from the early stages of reading and get progressively harder as children’s reading skills and levels develop.
